Thanks to the strong and consistent support from The Denver Foundation and Metro Mayors Caucus, MDHI is able to offer timely financial assistance to remove barriers to housing. Any organization or provider that partners with OneHome or is a member of the Metro Denver CoC can request funds to help individuals or families experiencing homelessness obtain permanent housing.
Press Release, June 5, 2019: Metro Mayors, Denver Foundation Boost “Flex Fund” to Provide Quick Assistance to Prevent and Address Homelessness
Purpose of the MDHI Flex Fund
The MDHI Flex Fund supports households who need one-time financial assistance to exit homelessness. The fund will be used when the following criteria are met: 1) the household would continue to experience homelessness but for this one-time financial assistance, 2) the household is experiencing literal homelessness and the request meets other eligibility criteria, and 3) there are enough funds in the MDHI Flex Fund to fulfill the request.
Efforts to obtain assistance from other sources must be documented before requesting the assistance from the Flex Fund.
To receive assistance, the household must be experiencing literal homelessness (staying in places not meant for human habitation, transitional housing, or in the shelter system) in Metro Denver. The person submitting the request is responsible for verifying that the household is be able to maintain their housing after one-time assistance is provided. MDHI will consider requests for households who are currently living in permanent supportive housing programs or being assisted by rapid re-housing programs. It is important to note that this is not an eviction prevention program.
Funds will be allocated when there is an actual lease to be signed by the household or when the household is seeking a co-housing situation with a friend or family member. The MDHI Flex Fund caps assistance at $3,000 per household. The Flex Fund can pay for the following landlord mitigation or move-in expenses:
- Security/rental deposits
- One-time move-in assistance (truck rental, hiring moving company)
- First month's rent or month of rent following the household's move-in month
- Damage repair or vacancy payment to landlord/property owner
- Rental assistance - past unit
- Utility Assistance - deposits (including water) and arrears
- Pet deposits or one-time pet fees
- Relocation to another community when there is a confirmed housing opportunity
- Other financial barriers to permanent housing
Funds will only be allocated to a third party such as a property management company, landlord, utility company, etc. Upon approval of the Flex Fund request, organizations/agencies must collect a W-9 form filled out by the third-party vendor and other required backup documentation tied to the cost and submit to MDHI.
